St. Josef in Oberhausen is a hospital with 330 beds and a long-standing tradition. They offer all medical services in general medicine, general surgery as well as plastic and trauma surgery, neurology, psychiatry and pain therapy.

Dr. Karl Schäfer and Dr. Jürgen H. Freitag are the only radiologists in the hospital, but nevertheless they offer 24 hour service, 7 days a week! How is that possible?

The two radiologists, having to be available 24/7 to guarantee adequate radiological services, had a very stressful everyday working life and were therefore desperately looking for an alternative solution. Thus, they were more than happy to learn about our Mobile Radiology Information and Telemedicine System MORITS and chose to implement it in St. Josef Hospital to make their work easier.

Since June 2005, the doctors use two specially calibrated ultra high resolution laptops connected with the hospital using a mobile UMTS/3G line. Now they are able do their findings from their homes and do not always have to be physically present in the hospital. But that's not all: they also have full mobile access to the hospital PACS and the digital imaging modalities in medical finding quality from anywhere in the world which is covered by a GSM network! And: the transmission of one cranial CT scan with 20 images takes only 3 minutes!

The lives of both radiologists have improved significantly: now they have the opportunity go to a party or go shopping while being on call. If there is an emergency they simply open their laptop and access the study, while also having automatic access to all prior studies. They do their findings and send them back electronically or via mobile fax to any referring physician.

The system combines in a perfect way better working conditions with cost saving and ensures a high diagnostic quality provided by an expert available at any time.
